Try not to maintain a perpetual state of willpower depletion
We all know that lifting weight helps to build muscles. However, it will not make sense to lift weights for about 30 minutes, just before assisting your friend to move his furniture. Doing so means that you will not help him efficiently because the muscles will be too strained. You also would not lift the weights for hours daily with no recovery time. This is similar to how willpower works. If you do not give yourself a break or recovery time, you will deplete your resolve.
Make use of your imagination
One of the best ways to strengthen your willpower is to use your imagination. Our bodies tend to react to imagined situations similarly to experienced situations. For instance, if you imagine yourself relaxing on a beautiful beach, the body will also react by relaxing. If you imagine negative situations, your body will respond by being tense. So build your willpower by imagining positive situations.
Focus on other things
You can keep negative thoughts at bay by focusing on other positive things. In order for you to avoid over thinking or focusing on a dreadful situation, train your mind to think of something else instead. That way, you will be taking control of your thoughts and will not dwell on a situation.
Practice good habits that are helpful in times of stress
Stress is one of the main factors that deplete willpower. Usually, when people are stressed out, chances are that they will fall back on deep rooted habits which can either be harmful or helpful. In many cases, this will not be a conscious choice.
Take for instance a situation where you have an important presentation which will determine whether you get that promotion or not. This is a highly stressful situation and under these circumstances the body usually reacts by boosting stress hormones, especially cortisol. This hormone will increase your cravings for carbohydrates since the carbohydrates lower cortisol levels.
You might end up hanging out with friends and eating unhealthy carbs. If you make it a habit that every time you are stressed, you make unhealthy food choices, you will be basically strengthening such habits and the chance that you will do the same thing over again are very high.
Fortunately, you can break the bad habits by training yourself to react to stress with healthier choices until you overcome willpower reducing habits.
Take your time
Sometimes, people give up on their goals not due to a lack of willpower, but because of the enormity of their goals which leaves them very overwhelmed. The trick here is to take things one step at a time. The good thing about this strategy is that you will be guaranteed success and you will not find yourself in a situation where your willpower will be depleted. After reaching each sub goal, you will have an enormous sense of satisfaction. This will make it simpler to focus on the next sub goal.
Stay true to yourself
It takes too much effort to be someone you are not; doing so will gradually deplete willpower. If you suppress who you truly are with the aim of pleasing others, this will deplete your willpower. A people pleaser will always be at a disadvantage when compared to someone who stays true to himself.
Avoid temptation's way unless you have a plan
Distance yourself as much as possible from those places that will test your willpower. If you see that avoiding the temptation is impossible, simply come up with a plan in advance for how you are going to deal with the situation instead of falling for the temptation.
